Birch trees have upright or hanging branches with long, pendulous catkins, light-green leaves, and mostly white bark that is truly stunning in springtime.
In the Nordic countries, people worship the birch as the tree of light and the new spring. The park is home to both silver and downy birch, but also various crosses between the two species.
Birch trees are the first trees to go into leaf in the park. The birch is a pioneer species, or the first to colonize empty or near-empty areas. Birch trees can spread their light seeds over vast distances, unlike the much heavier seeds of the oak and beech.
